Proximity and Position Sensors

Operating Principle

Proximity Sensors

The Vibro-Meter UK 0100KPX and 0200KPX were developed as replacements for microswitch-based position and proximity sensors to detect the door lock actuator position for the Hurel-Hispano thrust reverser on the A318/PW6000. Both sensors utilize an air-gapped transformer to produce an electrical output as a ratio of excitation voltage. The 0100KPX sensor produces an output dependent on axial or lateral position of a ferromagnetic target attached to the moving element of the system. The 0200KPX produces an output dependent on the position of a ferromagnetic core attached internally to the sensor plunger, which is in contact with the door lock actuator. Both sensors interface with the FADEC controller to provide multi-level sensing. By eliminating electrical switch contacts, reliability is greatly increased. This technology can be used on other applications, such as airframes and closures, where confirmation or position is required.

Vibro-Meter is developing other sensors using similar technology, which can be influenced by non-ferromagnetic targets such as stainless steel and aluminum.

0100 KPX Construction

The 0100KPX proximity sensor is constructed from stainless steel with the connecting lead terminating in a connector or wire ended. The electrical components within the sensor are impregnated and protected from vibration and contamination by potting.

0200 KPX Construction

The 0200KPX position sensor is constructed of stainless steel. The plunger is sealed with a wiping action, spring energized, PTFE seal. The contacting face of the plunger is protected with nodular thin dense chromium plating providing excellent long term wear resistance and anti-galling properties. Venting is achieved by a micro-pore sintered filter that effectively eliminates fluids and contaminants.

Displacement Transducers

The working principle of the new Vibro-Meter displacement transducer is the measurement of the variable inductance of a linear coil. The temperature compensation is built into the sensor and achieved by measuring the resistance of the coil. The displacement measurement is made by measuring the reactance. The measurement system is lightweight and especially suitable for OEM avionics applications. This type of displacement transducer reduces the length of the space envelope by about 40% compared with LVDT'S.

Typical applications are:

  • Fuel regulation systems on jet engines
  • Variable pitch blade servo systems for turbo engines
  • Control of actuated surfaces on aircraft structures

Pressure

Pressure Transducers

dynamic pressure transducer

Dynamic Pressure Transducer
for high temperature applications.

Vibro-Meter has developed piezoelectric dynamic pressure sensors for many aviation applications for extreme temperature environments. The force created on the diaphragm is applied to the piezoelectric stack which produces an electric signal charges). The secondary effect of vibration is internally compensated. Thus the generated signal is purely proportional to the dynamic pressure applied to the diaphragm. The working temperatures of these transducers can be higher than 700ºC. These types of transducers are used mainly for jet pipe resonance detection on various engines for military applications. State of the art devices have also been released with two channels in order that redundancy is "built in" and a better interface provided for BITE functions.

Speed Probes

Fundamentals

Speed Probes

The speed probe is an alternating voltage generator producing an electrical signal. The frequency of this electrical signal is proportional to the engine shaft speed. The speed probe contains one or two coils and a rare earth permanent magnet. In rotating machinery the speed probe sensing surface faces the phonic wheel. The magnetic flux varies in density with the passage of each tooth. These flux changes induce an alternating voltage in the coil surrounding the permanent magnet, the frequency of which is a function of shaft speed.

Typical Sensor Features:

  • One or several complete enclosed sensing elements
  • Active system, no supply voltage required
  • Wide temperature range
  • Advanced wire interconnection technique
  • Hermetically sealed construction
  • Stainless steel, titanium, or Inconel 600 housing
  • Designed for aircraft engine
  • Environmental conditions
  • No scheduled maintenance
  • High MTBF - basic design adaptable for customised construction

Typical Applications for Speed Probes:

  • Shaft rotational position
  • Direction of rotation
  • Shaft torque

  • Wheel Speed

Optical Sensors

Light-Off Detectors

Light-Off Detector

Vibro-Meter's Light-Off Detectors (LOD) detect the presence of afterburner ignition on military aircraft. The LOD uses Vibro-Meter produced ultra-violet radiation detectors (UV tubes) that view the afterburner flame through a port in its liner. Critical attributes of this sensor are immunity to sunlight and rapid detection times despite exposure to afterburner temperature and pressures.

Sensors

Vibro-Meter is well known for the quality and reliability of its sensors, especially for applications in extreme environments. High and low temperatures, radiation, humidity, chemicals -- whatever the demands, you'll find a Vibro-Meter sensor that will not only survive but work well.

Importantly, we treat our piezoelectric materials for maximum stability; therefore, most of our sensors do not require routine calibration.

In this section you will find data covering the most common types of sensors used for industrial and marine applications. If you do not see what you want here, please ask us -- we have many more products available.

Signal Conditioners and Barriers

Overview

Vibro-Meter has evolved a signal transmission system that provides clean data over long distances in electrically noisy environments.

At the earliest opportunity (using electronics inside the sensor housing, if possible, or a separate signal conditioner module located close to the sensor) we convert the analogue charge or voltage waveform from the sensor into a balanced current signal. This can easily drive up to a km of standard screened twisted pair instrumentation cable. At the receiving end, the current signal is connected to a GSI or GSV module, which acts as an electrical isolator, coverts the signal back to a voltage, and provides any power required by the sensor and its conditioner. This voltage signal is then routed to the monitoring or data acquisition electronics. Intrinsically safe signal chains are available.

The current transmission system has proven itself to be extremely reliable and trouble free, even in difficult environments with high electrical noise. Voltage transmission is an option for the IPC 704 and some other chains.

VM600

Overview

The VM 600 is a digital, modular, scaleable hardware and software solution for Plant Usage Optimization, providing integrated machinery protection, condition and advanced performance monitoring from a single source.

VM 600 is the most advanced, flexible and configurable system available. Among many innovative features, the signal processing cards can accept any normal transducer (absolute vibration, shaft vibration, displacement, temperature, pressure, etc.) and perform any machinery monitoring function without the need for different sub-modules or hardware adjustments -- the cards are fully software configurable. This simplifies specification, installation and training, while reducing spares stocks and service times.

The VM 600 condition monitoring software is powerful and fully featured, while remaining easy to learn and to use, running under WindowsTMNT/2000, SCO Open ServerTM (Unix) or LinuxTM, on standard networks. Full remote access with multi-level security is available.

For full control over turbomachinery running costs, Vibro-Meter provides VM 600 performance monitoring software. Using data from the VM 600 and other systems, the operator sees the exact condition and performance of his machinery. Advisory functions include maintenance actions required, cost optimization, hot parts life calculation, emmissions tax calculations and more. Performance monitoring is usually applied to gas turbines and the VM 600 software excels in this, while also covering steam turbines, compressors and pumps.

Compact Monitors

VibroSmart

The VMU100 Compact Monitor is a surprisingly powerful protection monitor in a compact and rugged housing. Fully programmable, this digital monitor provides power and signal conditioning for the sensor, and performs filtering, rectification, and level comparisons on the signals to provide early warning of machinery problems, and shut-down in the event of a serious failure. There are optional DC outputs and optional serial communications for remote set-up and collection of level and status information. The live, unfiltered buffered dynamic signal is available on a BNC connector for data collectors and analysers.

Fire Detection

Omniguard® ... First in Flame Detection

Omniguard flame detectors

The value of early fire detection is immeasurable in the protection of human life and valuable property. Omniguard® flame detectors are known throughout the world for their outstanding quality and reliability in a wide variety of high risk fire protection applications.

Discrimination between a true fire and a "false alarm" event is also critical for efficient and cost effective protection management. That is why Omniguard® flame detectors are widely used in aircraft hangars, fuel transfer stations, natural gas compressor stations, and petrochemical storage facilities.

Vibro-Meter, Inc. manufactures several families of optical sensing devices. Over 75 years of optical sensing experience and expertise has allowed us to pioneer many new technologies that have set the standards for the industry.

Using UV or IR sensors, or a combination of both, we are able to sense and notify the user of various conditions and parameters of flame.

Our Omniguard® line of UV and UV/IR flame detectors (Models 660, 760, 860, and 860 Multi-Spectrum) are used to notify when a potentially dangerous fire (an "unfriendly fire") has started. All detectors are explosion-proof devices, and are certified for use in hazardous area applications. Vibro-Meter, Inc. pioneered both the first UV and the first UV/IR detectors, and continue to lead the industry with superior performance, features, and quality

All Omniguard® Detectors provide:

  • five year warranty on the UV and IR sensors used in our flame detectors
  • three year total warranty against component or manufacturing defects
  • design, engineering, and manufacture exclusively by Vibro-Meter, Inc.

We recently introduced our new Fuel Contamination DetectorTM (Model 970), which is based on IR sensors. This new detector is able to both monitor the presence of flame, and also identify and quantify the presence of contaminates in the fuel being burned. This is especially important to turbine manufacturers and users.

Edison® UV Flame Scanners

First in Flame MonitoringTM

Edison® UV Flame Scanners have been in use for more than 40 years, providing dependable flame on/off indication for gas turbines and boiler applications.

Vibro-Meter, Inc. also offers flame scanners utilizing the latest in solid state optical technology. Using fiber optic cables, a remote electronics/sensor suite, and customized analytical software, this solid state system continues our tradition in reliable flame monitoring solutions.

The Vibro-Meter Flame Scanner is an ultraviolet-based detector used to indicate the presence or absence of a flame within the combustor of an industrial gas turbine. These devices, via a view port directly in the turbine combustion zone, continuously monitor flame status and provide feedback to the control system through relay outputs. This monitoring is particularly critical during engine start-up and light-off of the turbine combustors.

Using the Edison developed ultraviolet tube for sensing, the scanner responds to the ultraviolet radiation with wavelengths between 1900 and 2900 angstroms (present in all flames), but does not respond to infrared or visible spectrums. Therefore, it is suitable for supervision of gas-fired, oil-fired, or combination industrial burners or turbines.

Available in standard, weather-proof, and explosion-proof, these units have proven themselves to be dependable, quality performers.
