BEI's SwiftComm wireless encoder interface was designed from the ground up to meet the wireless demands of industrial motion control applications.  It provides an extremely robust wireless signal in real time over a secure network. 

SwiftComm uses a point-to-point frequency-hopping 2.4 GHz RF protocol and will interface directly with any incremental or SSI absolute encoder.  Simply connect the SwiftComm transmitter to the encoder and the SwiftComm receiver to your control system and apply power.  That’s it!  No complicated cabling required.

Hazardous Area EncodersDo you need encoders designed for hazardous environments? To keep pace with the growth of complex industrial processes, BEI has developed rugged, quality encoders that meet high standards and certifications for use in potentially explosive environments. BEI brings you specially designed encoders to meet your appropriate specifications. There are a variety of protection methods available depending on the circumstance of a particular installation. For optical encoders, the most commonly used methods are explosion proof construction and intrinsic safety, detailed below:

EXPLOSION PROOF CONSTRUCTION METHOD
In this encoder protection technique the equipment is contained in an enclosure that can withstand an internal explosion of the most volatile gas-to-air mixture that can penetrate into the interior of the encoder enclosure. The enclosure must contain the explosion without damage and without allowing the flame to leave the enclosure through any joints or other openings. BEI Sensors has released the encoder industry's first ATEX and UL rated explosion proof hollow shaft encoder, Model HS52.

INTRINSIC SAFETY METHOD
This encoder protection technique uses an apparatus that limits the maximum level of current and voltage (usually measured as energy in millijoules) that can be delivered into the hazardous location. This equipment ensures that even in a double fault condition, there will not be enough energy to ignite the gas or vapor in that area. Note that encoders that use this method of protection, must use energy limiting devices (commonly called Barriers) in their installation. An Intrinsically Safe encoder, installed without an Intrinsic Safety Barrier is not an Intrinsically Safe system.

The Omnicoder features a dynamic encoder resolution that allows users to easily program the encoder resolution anywhere between 1 and 10,000 counts per turn.  Packaged in BEI’s flagship Model H25® incremental encoder, the Omnicoder allows for virtually unlimited resolution variations. 

  • Simple Programming 
    Using a computer USB port and simple programming interface software, users can reprogram the encoder’s resolution on site as needed. Using the existing encoder connector and programming cable, connect to a computer via the USB port.  In the software, type the encoder resolution and click 'Program'.  A new resolution is now programmed. 
  • Stock one encoder type 
    For users with multiple resolution requirements, Omnicoders can be kept in stock and programmed just prior to installation.
  • Take the guess work out of specifying encoder resolution
    When ordering a typical encoder, resolution is selected at the time an order is placed.  This resolution is then fixed for the life of the encoder.  With the Omnicoder, resolution can be programmed and reprogrammed at any time by the user.

Heavy Duty Encoders for Harsh Environments

Environmentally Sealed Optical Encoders

Through the use of a magnetic shaft coupling connection, Model ES is completely sealed with an IP67 environmental rating. This coupling connection allows the encoder to be isolated from high shock and vibration, dust tight, and impervious to debris or liquid in the environment. Model ES encoders can even operate while fully immersed in one meter of water for up to 30 minutes. 

Since the Model ES is not physically coupled to external equipment, it is much more tolerant of shaft misalignment, meaning no more broken couplings! Ideal for applications with heavy wash-downs, temporary water immersions, and excessive environmental debris.

Extended Temperature Testing of Encoders 
 

If your application requires encoders to be exposed to extreme temperatures, extended temperature testing is available for many BEI encoder models. All BEI encoders have a standard operating range of 0 to +70 degrees Celsius. Ordering your encoder with an extended temperature test ensures it will operate from as low as -55 degrees Celsius to as high as +105 degrees Celsius.

This DIN rail mounted encoder interface lets you connect an encoder to a variety of controllers, or to multiple input devices. It provides an optically isolated signal and is available with one of four output driver options making it compatible with all major counter, drive and PLC components. Multiple modules can be daisy-chained together and drive as many as eight different devices from a single encoder. 

The interface module also provides LED output indicators for two quadrature channels and an index. All circuitry for the module is packaged in a housing that mounts to a standard external DIN rail. For ease of installation, a 75 mm length of DIN rail is supplied with each module.

This Galvanically Isolated Intrinsic Safety Barrier is the perfect complement to BEI encoders for hazardous environments. It is electrically compatible with all popular counters, PLCs and controllers, and it features isolation for power and three signal channels, as well as LED indicators for power and data - all in a single DIN rail package.

The BEI Barrier carries CENELEC, UL and cUL ratings and is suitable for long cable runs. Since it also carries a nonincendive designation per the National Electrical Code, it can be mounted in Class I, Division 2 areas.

Dual Encoder to USB Converter

This module can handle signals from two SSI absolute encoders or two quadrature encoders and translates the encoder position to industry standard USB 2.0 format. For SSI absolute encoders, the module can be programmed through the USB interface for number of bits, clock speed and position offeset. For incremental encoders, count mode (X1, X2, X4), reset, preset, and preset/reset on index are programmable through the USB input. Optional programmable data sample function allows module to automatically capture readings on an accurate time clock. This DIN rail mounted tester is designed to simply and reliably test the operation of any industrial encoder. The tester provides LED output indicators for two quadrature channels and an index as an aid in troubleshooting and equipment set-up. It can be used for field troubleshooting, incoming inspection, and to check the operation of encoded motors. It comes with an instruction booklet that includes connection diagrams for all the common encoder output types and voltages.

Circuitry for the Tester is packed in a standard housing that mounts to an external DIN rail type EN 50 022. For ease of installation, a length of DIN rail is supplied with each Tester.

The Anti-Dither module accepts quadrature inputs (A and B signals) and sends a single channel signal to the counter circuitry only when there has been true movement of the encoder. The Broadcaster accepts standard incremental encoder inputs, (two channels in quadrature plus an index and complements) and can broadcast up to four encoder signals to four independent devices. Each of the broadcast signals is optically isolated eliminating ground loops. This compact package also allows for signal processing options, such as anti-dither filter, integer countdown or pulse and direction outputs, to be incorporated into each of the four broadcast signals independently. The broadcaster is ideal for driving multiple receivers from a single encoder in applications like electronic line shafting or synchronization of multiple devices to a single operation.

The module accepts signals from 5 to 28 VDC and provides three output options: Vout = Vin, Vout = 5 V or NPN open collector. The compact package mounts to standard EN 50 022 35mm X 7.5mm DIN rail and is 142mm wide, 78mm deep and 45mm above the DIN rail.  A 155mm section of DIN rail is included.

BEI’S serial-to-parallel converter module takes serial data from any BEI Serial Synchronous Interface (S3) or RS-422 Interface (S1) encoders and converts it to a parallel output. This eliminates the high cost and noise susceptibility of long, parallel cable runs, enabling the simplicity of a serial output encoder and a low cost twisted pair cable to interface with a standard PLC or controller. The bright LED indicators give visual status for deserialization, testing and troubleshooting.

Serial input, either SSI or RS-422 is easily selectable by a Format Select terminal directly on the board.  In SSI mode, the on-board clock generates pulses to signal the encoder to provide data.  Data is received serially and converted to a parallel format. Clock frequency is selectable by a Speed Select terminal, again directly on the board.  For 100 feet or less, the 1.25 MHz mode can be used and for longer distances, up to 500 feet, a 200 kHz rate is available.

In RS-422 mode, data is received asynchronously from the encoder and converted to a parallel format. Speed Select input is used to set the baud rate: 19.2 kBaud for most applications, up to 500 feet; 115.2 kBaud for shorter runs below 100 feet.

The Model LT25 linear cable transducer provides digital position and speed information in a durable, easy-to-install package. The LT25 cable transducer utilizes a flexible cable, a spring-loaded spool, and an incremental optical encoder to precisely measure linear position. Cable transducers are also known in the industry as cable-extension transducers, string potentiometers, draw wire sensors, draw wire transducers, yo yo pots, linear position string pots, string encoders.

The sturdy measuring cable (also referred to as the string or wire) is made of nylon coated stainless steel for ultimate strength with a measurement range up to 125 inches. The LT25's compact profile and IP66 rating makes this a perfect solution to a variety of industrial linear measurement challenges, whether involved in concrete cutting, controlling hydraulic cylinders, metal grinding, or having an awkward access area for measurement.

One of the greatest advantages the linear cable transducer offers is itssimple and adaptable installation. Simply connect the wire to your moving equipment and secure the base to a fixed object. Hard to reach areas and worries about shaft misalignment are now not a problem, as the LT25's flexibldesign allows for versatile measurement setups with the same interface design as used for rotary axes.

Installing the LT25 Linear Cable Transducer

The LT25 Linear Cable Transducer installs in just a few simple steps:  

Step One:
Mount the LT25 securely to a stable, flat surface using the attached L-shaped mounting bracket with 1/4" (6mm) maximum diameter fastener.

Step Two:
Attach the cable using the eyelet provided (M4, #8 screw or /16" pin).

Tips to prevent damage to the measuring cable :
  • Make certain the cable path is clear of objects or sharp edges to prevent cable damage

  • Damage may occur if cable is released and allowed to retract with no tension

  • Cable should exit as straight as possible. A pulley may be used to redirect cable path

Flexible Installation Options

The LT25 allows for easy reorientation of the mounting bracket or encoder connector position. This gives users added flexibility in their installation.

 

How to Change the Mounting Bracket Position

Remove the four screws as shown with a PH-2 (Phillips) driver, reposition in 90° increments, and tighten screws to approximately 13in-lb.
